Bring Out Your Beasts – MONSTER DRAWINGS

Felt compelled to draw some vile things and a little less of the London Underground (although I will be coming back to this very soon) I have been getting my brain monsters and design down on paper. Most of these sketches, doodle's, drawing have been captured on a traditional cartridge paper using both my mechanical pencil and graphite.

I think it has to be said that I get a level of satisfaction from drawing the grisly details of creatures, be it afflictions, boils, wounds, teeth and any other visceral part of the anatomy. Drawing this gives me sense inner rhythm , a hum or chord in which my body and mind tunes into. It's gives me sense of focus and relaxation which I can only graze upon with these few words.

Take your time to have a browse, I have been feeling quite inspired to do some more creature design and studies since going to the zoological museum at UCL. Elephant skulls are quite fascinating to draw and also strange without flesh. That's for another day.

Well this a blast from the past. I figured that this bit of fun should grace the internet! lets call it a 10 year anniversary for good measure. 

This photo was taken around the time of the carefree days prior to uni and PCAD - simple times as you can tell. This piece of photography came about by chance, I remember looking at the rounded stones and thinking... (not a lot) well probably went something like this.

"Mate, go between those rocks stick your arses in the air!... left a bit, right! Good!' Click!

And now you have it a, a sea of apparent arses carved from natural landscape in one monochrome photo. I was most likely hoping for reactions such as:

'Oh my word!' China sets flung everywhere
'Oh my days! Doily all askew and monocles popping out left right and centre! 

Well it was fun. Photo taken near Polperro at Talland Bay. - Models Ritchie Crane and Darrell Butler. - Prints were available.

Character Sketches From Train Journey To Work - Random faces, Wimbledom Imp

Do you ever find one random sketch leads to another..? These are some faces that I have taken from my sketch book en-route to work in the London rush hour. The man sitting on the bench is based on an actual person I've seen sat outside Wimbledon Centre Court with his stomach hanging from under his shirt, smiling to the world - he reminded me of a happy gnome! Apparently, completely oblivious to the fact that all was hanging for the world to see in broad daylight, it was a spectacle to behold and slightly strange.

Sketch book - Character Faces

I felt my blog lacked this kind of thing, sketches, work in progress WIP's etc. So I wanted to start adding this kind of thing. People, faces, expressions and characters are just some of my areas of obsession, I get my kicks and from drawing gravely faces, ladies, scars and anything that comes to mind.

Back tracking slightly... somebody asked what was my favorite thing to draw - a tough question with more than one answer. I would say story telling, characters, hero's, villains, thieves, rogues, monsters, beasts, ladies, history, a scene the list goes on and on. I like to draw detail!!!

I'm quite liking the mean old man character and the lady eyes.

And yes... I do, do a spot of people watching... I get a lot of inspiration from crowded places.

Illustration Meet Ups in Central London - network with other creatives and expand your business

Yoillo! Illustration Networking

Last Wednesday, I attended another Yoillo meet up in the quiet upstairs pub of the Yorkshire Grey. A traditional comfy pub tucked away in the back streets of central London. I sat there drinking my cider, waiting for the other attendees; slowly they trickled in, with the organizer Rob Barrett being the first.

The 'Yoillo meet ups' are basically the chance to network with other artists and illustrators and talk about random everyday stuff, or your latest project with like-minded people. I work as a Designer and Developer in gadget company producing artwork web bits, so I'm always looking for edge. In other words, I work across a wide area of creative projects; they call me ‘Art Guy’ at work, a Mr Crayola of the company. I found this get together to be an refreshing way to chat and network in an informal and relaxed way with industry professionals. These types of artists ranged from cartoonists, gothic artists, designers of various genres. This was great way of feeling inspired and keeping your ear to the ground.

On both occasions (October and November) 6 + people have turned up to the event, (25 plus at its biggest so I’m told) we exchanged business cards, flyers, did a bit of show and tell and picked each other’s brains about the industry and what is going on in the world at present. Ultimately it’s a great chance to get out the house for a chat and drink... so come along and bring others.

Professionals and hobbyists welcome! Usually around the middle of the month after 7pm.

London Drawing at the Tower of London.

Update – London Drawing at the Tower of London.

Sorry, 2 weeks later and then I manage to update… what can I say, I have been busy.
Anyway, I was really impressed with the night I had at the Tower of London. The eerie surroundings, the crisp chill of the night autumn air, it provided a night to remember.

London Drawing held an event in the Tower of London where costumed models and historical back stories pathe the way for the fertile imagination. Pencils, felt tips, pastels, charcoal and various other mediums where all supplied. The group was then split down the middle and placed in 2 different areas for a limited period of time. This was to avoid the overcrowding of the small areas and to get as much drawing in as possible. I wouldn’t say I had time to get a polished drawing in as the models moved around every 10 minutes to my surprise, speed was the key to the night so sketched the model and surroundings as quick as possible.

It is great an opportunity to draw, chat and become immersed in history of Tudor England (ToL). I recommend to any life drawing enthusiasts’, artists or anyone that likes history to take part in this.
